I like Valentine's day. Yes, I know it is an entirely commercially created holiday. The stores make a killing. But what about a holiday to celebrate love is there not to love? I hate supporting the commercial monster too, so we keep it simple and mostly homemade. This is the first year I've done what I remember my mom doing every year...making some kind of cake or cookie pink and red sugary delight. Usually it was heart shaped sugar cookies with pink icing. So that is what I made. I don't think we ever properly appreciate how much work goes into these "small" signs of love until we are adults doing them for other children. My mother's homemade sugar cookies are a pain in the butt! But they taste oh so yummy with the touch of almond extract and the buttery frosting. Brad got them balloons and they made homemade cards for us and it is all so sweet and fuzzy and...pink.

I'm not normally a totally cheeseball. But for today, I'm a complete sap. Deal with it.
