Mar. 25th, 2007 06:42 pmI'm bone tired. But in a good, worn out from being happy busy way.
On Friday night we went to the circus. All three girls seemed to enjoy it a lot. Mari LOVED it, Zoe liked it a lot, and Luci really liked it for the first hour or so, but started getting a bit bored and antzy toward the end. We bought cotton candy and popcorn because what is the circus without it? But the cotton candy was a HUGE mistake. As we were getting ready to leave, Luci just all of sudden seemed to lose control of herself completely. I could actually feel and see it coming. She just got really odd and wiggly in an uncomfortable in her own skin kind of way and wasn't making eye contact very well and wasn't even making sense when she talked. I tried to choose my words carefully and keep talking and distracting as much as possible, but the over-stimulation of the crowd and the show combined with the cotton candy and exhaustion...well, I finally just had to pick her up and carry her out in a full-blown tantrum after she stopped making any sense at all. It was awful. She completely and totally lost it. Kicking, screaming like someone was trying to kill her, saying things that made no sense, she was refusing all the coping and calming things I had to offer, the soothing tone, singing "her" song, praying the Jesus Prayer...nothing was getting through. She was just...gone. I have bruises. But she doesn't and no one else does, so that is good at least. I'm surprised no security stopped us, honestly. It was the worst tantrum I've seen since before we tried that really strict diet with her like a year and a half ago. I ended up crying quietly on the way home because I felt so awful for her. It was so obvious that she just couldn't cope with life at all for that hour or so, it was just insane. It was just so sad. All I can think of that could have been changed about the situation was the cotton candy. Anyway, the circus was a success other than the last hour on the way out and on the way home.
Then on Saturday I went grocery shopping in the morning, and took Zoe and Luci to a gymnastics make-up class at noon. My cousin, Dustin, stopped by right before we left for gymnastics and he and his wife, Laine, wanted to come. Laine was a gymnast all through high school. Her sister went to college on a gymnastics scholarship. So it was fun chatting with them about gymnastics while the girls did their stuff. After that we all piled in the car and went to Mount Vernon. That was a LOT more fun that I thought it would be. I've never been there and I thought the girls would be bored, not really having a good frame of reference to understand who George Washington is, but they actually seemed to really enjoy it. Mari and Zoe especially liked it and now they are pointing out George Washington on dollar bills, on the side of rental RVs with Mount Rushmore painted on them, on signs in DC, etc. It is amazing how often that man's face is displayed around here. Anyway, we went out to dinner and then came home and put the girls to bed. Then all the adults watched the movie Firewall. I hated it, but it was fun hanging out with them.
Today we went to church. Dustin and Laine went with us. Dustin has visited Orthodox Churches before various times. Laine has never been. I'm always a little nervous taking someone to an Orthodox Church for the first time. I had to go teach Sunday School right after Liturgy, so I didn't get to talk to them about their impressions. Brad did and he is downright AWFUL at telling me what other people say and how they say it. I was sad to miss it. We came back home and changed clothes and then went over to the campground where Dustin and Laine are staying. They have a neat nature trail along the river there and the girls loved hiking around finding treasures. We made our back to the campsite where Dustin started a fire and we made s'mores. The girls were in heaven. It was their first time roasting marshmellows.
Now we are back home and just finished dinner. I have to get up and put my munchkins to bed. A busy (for us) and very full weekend. I'm ready to crash too. Night-night, all!
