Camera recommendations?

We need a new digital camera. I know some of you are camera savvy. I want a camera that takes really good pictures, but doesn't require me to have any fancy skills. Recommendations? I want to learn to take good pictures so I need a user friendly camera, but one that will inspire me.

Also, if it doesn't cost me my children's college educations that would be nice.
