Homeschool math help!
Nov. 12th, 2008 10:07 amCan all you homeschoolers give me your opinions on the best workbook based math curriculum out there? I really love the concept of mental math and so am considering Singapore Math because I think it will be a good transition from Rightstart Math which is very mental math based and not math fact based. But I don't really know.
The reason I ask is that Zoe is continuing to freak out on me about doing math. She seems to really enjoy having a start and stop point she can see right in front of her and Rightstart isn't doing that for her. She also seems really annoyed by all the manipulatives. She has a real math brain and understands these concepts quickly and I think if she could be more self taught and self paced, like she would be with a workbook based approach, she'd be happier. She enjoys doing her Kumon math workbooks but I'm not happy with rote memorization and constant repetition as a math teaching method. I want her to understand what she is doing in deep way. She already sees the world this way, it is natural to her to look for patterns and hear and see them everywhere and I don't want to destroy that. I want to encourage it. She is the child who figured out multiplication all by herself. So...opinions? Is Singapore Math my best bet?
Luci is not doing well with Rightstart either and I think it is for a lot of the same reasons. So will probably try her on whatever I choose too. Maria LOVES Rightstart and so I plan to stick with it for her. It is working and I don't want to mess with success!
