I'm sure I'm not the only one that has the experience of having a Christmas carol come to the forefront for you every year, that just seems to speak to you for some reason. These are songs we've heard over and over again our whole lives and we stop listening to the profound words after awhile I'm sure. So, for me, just about every year there is one or two carols or songs that "hit" me square in the chest and I really hear what they are saying.
This year the first one to do that is Hark the Hearald Angels...
Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King
Can't really say why, but this one is just really amazing me this year. Somehow bringing that sense of awe and mystery I remember having as a kid staring at my mother's Nativity set. God...as a baby. As a boy. As a man. Here to die and "beat death", as I tell my kids, for us. For Love. Love that we human beings can't even fathom.
Whoa.
