The father of the family I live with started taking both the 3 1/2 year old and the nearly 2 year old to synagogue with him after the new baby was born (he used to just take the boy). They have to walk over a mile to get there (no driving on Shabbat), and he is not supposed to push a stroller or the big-kid carriage that he uses on Shabbat either (it counts as "carrying outside one's domain"). I was surprised that he made exception for this, because they are very strict about their observances and it is not something you can just choose what you do and do not want to observe. I mean, this is a family that won't sign hospital intake papers on Shabbos, or open the dishwasher if the lights are on on it. But I liked his answer to it, "I figured there was a much hotter place in hell for me if I left my wife home with too many kids by herself on Shabbat."
