So, Zoe has a horrendous ear infection. No fever at all. Not even much complaining. Just gunk in her ear that looks and smells horrible. We spent six hours in the ER yesterday. She has a "72 hour ENT consult" which I hope means we will be able to see the ENT within three days. The ER doc said her tube is clogged with nasty stuff and may have to be cleaned out. Man. I'm glad I didn't let this go any longer than I did. I'm glad I listened to myself and not Brad who kept saying she just had wax in her ears. Her intermittent mentions of pain coupled with the disgusting stuff coming out of her ear just didn't sit well with me, ya know?

My grandpa is in the hospital. He was jaundiced apparently. No one has been able to figure out why, but he's had to be restrained because he is so disoriented and confused. Grandpa is 86(?), I think, and has had a hard time lately. As long as he is at home with Grandma, he is fine. But if he leaves home he gets very upset and confused. I guess he wouldn't stay in his hospital bed and kept pulling out the tubes and stuff. I feel so bad for him and for Grandma. It makes getting old so frightening. I hope he can go back home soon and rest peacefully and without fear. I hope he gets to die there, without the fear and confusion a hospital would be to him. *sigh* Not much chance of that in our world, huh?

We've been really busy lately. I'd love to write some of the more interesting stuff that floods my brain from time to time. The poems. The random thoughts. The theological ponderings. But I just don't have time. Oh well. Probably better that way.

Nick's got to be evaluated by an ENT in the next 2 to 3 weeks to see about getting tubes in his ears. For some reason, I thought that if they had tubes in their ears, the ear infections would pretty much come to an end...

Zoe got her tubes when she was 18 mos. They told us at the time that she still might get infections. She is now three and a half and this is the first one she has had since she got the tubes. So I'd say it helped A LOT as she had one almost constantly before that. I'm still a little concerned that this is not a middle ear infection. She had NO signs of one. No fever (and she always had raging fevers, like up to 105 degrees, with her ear infections before), very little complaining, she even slept better than she did with any other ear infections. I'm worried this was some kind of ear injury, like she put something in her ear or something. This is just wierd. I'm hoping the ENT can shed some light on this one.

I did that once as a kid...put a little plastic piece from one of my brother's bath toys into my ear. I started losing my hearing, so I had to go to an ENT...he found the foreign object and then I was fine. Certainly, if her problem is being caused my an injury or foreign object or something other than a standard ear infection, the ENT will be able to figure it out.

My kids always get ear infections when they're getting new teeth. Maybe that's all that's causing Zoe's problem.

What teeth do that get at around three and a half? I thought we were good until the six or seven year old molars.

This is beyond a little teething irritation. Putrid, foul smelling goo is coming out of her ear. This is some kind of nasty infection.
