Grocery prices?
Jan. 14th, 2007 07:06 pmBe honest. How much do you REALLY spend on groceries each month?
It would help if when you answer you tell me how many people are in your household (in other words, how many people you are feeding with those groceries) and where, generally, you live.
I went to the grocery store tonight, here in northern Virgina, with a list made from a very well-planned two week menu. I spent $244. I've been tracking this for a few months now, and I seem to hover around $500 a month for groceries, including paper goods (toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, etc.) and often toiletries and cleaners too. We also go out to eat at least once week so that is another $150 or so. That just seems outrageous to me. That we are spending $650 a month on food and household items for five people. But maybe it isn't. I know it has gone up A LOT since we moved here. I could probably save a little going to the commissary, but with gas prices still pretty high and it being a 40 minute drive to the closest one, I don't see it saving us THAT much. I shop sales and try to buy store brands whenever possible. I do not use coupons. I do buy some organic and natural stuff.
I'm just wondering if I am really awful at food shopping or if this normal.
