I knew when Zoe was ready, she would just do it.

She read me one of the simplier Calvert phonics books tonight. Sounded out each word carefully. She needed some reminding about the sounds of the letter h and had she couldn't tell the difference between h and n. But this was just totally out of the blue. I wasn't even sure she knew the basic sounds of all the letters of the alphabet! This kid has never done a flashcard with me, played with starfall hardly at all, refused to do workbooks of pretty much any kind except dot to dot or thinking skills. Anything that smacked of phonics work made her shut down completely. I thought she wasn't the least bit interested in reading. But like with everything else, when that kid is ready, she just does it. She brought me a book the other day and said she was going to read it to me. Then she guessed at each word until I told her what it was. Then she asked me if she could read it to me again. She did...but I could tell she had memorized it, she wasn't even looking at the words, just the pictures. I didn't say anything, but she sighed really big and said, "I'm not really reading it, mom". I said, "but you could if you sound out the words one letter or sound at a time." Today she brought me the book again, and tried to sound out the words. There were some pretty advanced words phonetically in there, so I suggested she try one of the Calvert phonics books. She and I both were actually kind of shocked when she read the first word "Pat" without a problem after making each letter's sound. It was so much fun.

By the end of the book, she had the concept. As with all things in Zoe's life, she will be reading as well as Mari within a month, I'm willing to bet on it.

I love being her mommy.
