Apr. 19th, 2007 07:09 pmOur Spell to Write and Read (SWR) and RightStart Math (RS) came today. I'm so excited about it! I couldn't wait to get into the SWR manual and start reading it. Very interesting stuff. The manual doesn't just give lesson outlines, it goes deeply into the theory and history of teaching reading, spelling, and writing. I feel like I'm taking a college course in teaching language arts. Which, I suppose, I sort of am. This is the kind of learning I want to teach my children, I want them to have the tools to find out how to learn or teach themselves anything they want to. I don't need to go back to school. I'm learning right along with my kids! Fun stuff.
Of course, when I start reading books like this, I do feel a tug toward going back to school myself. I loved college. Not the atmosphere so much, and a lot of the time I was emotionally somewhat miserable being so far from my beloved and all. But the actual reason I was at college stuff was great! I loved being in a place where I could ask questions, get feedback, and be motivated and inspired by other students and teachers. I'm a life long learner, I think. A perennial student. I hope my kids will be too. If not...well, I guess they'll have other things though it is hard for me to imagine what is better than learning!
We will hopefully be starting our new stuff in June. I know, to those who are used to the September to May cycle of school, this is weird. But we are going to be year round schoolers, so we can take things slow and easy and really enjoy ourselves with no real time line. Maria and Zoe are going to be doing first grade together, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with Luci. Let her play and join us when she wants to, I guess. Seemed to work for Zoe. She learned an amazing amount of what Mari learned this year, just being in the same room a couple of times a week. Weird stuff, this learning by osmosis thing.
