I forgot to mention that I have a new niece. Well, she is Brad's brother's daughter, so it is really Brad's niece, but I'm married to Brad so she's mine too right? Anyway, she a cutie. Her name is Reece. My girls keep calling her Reece's Pieces. Ugh. My SIL won't like that, I'm sure. I can't wait to meet her though it will be be three months before I see her. Oh well, she will be at a good age by that point.

We shopped all day. Random errand type shopping. I'm exhausted. I'm going to go watch the last second season episode of BSG with Brad now.

I love the show. Not child friendly at all...but these netflix sci-fi series have been good bonding time for Brad and me. It is a good, layered, soap-opera series. Very intense. But I like the depth and the characters are phenomenal.

Many years to Renee, who happens to have one of my all-time favorite names.

Are you translating her name to Renee? I love that name too...not so sure about Reece yet. I'm sure it will grow on me though.

I did misread it.

I've heard of a boy's name "Rhys" pronounced the same way, but I've never heard of a girl with the name.

When you think about it, we do call girls by names that refer to candy. Maybe it won't be toooooo bad.

There's Reese Witherspoon, although she spells it slightly differently.

I do think if you can't handle any of the obvious nicknames that might be expected to arise from your child's name, you should choose something else. And "Reece's Pieces" seems darn obvious to me.

Very obvious, since a five and four year old came up with it. Actually, I believe they were egged on by a grandma who wasn't all the pleased with the name....

Yes, well, I have another niece, my sister's daughter, named Bennett. I guess my extended family was into androgynous names. Poor Bennett was mostly bald until she was two. Her poor mom had a hard time convincing people Bennett was a girl.

I'm just grateful Reece was a girl. If she'd been a boy, her name was supposed to be Slate.

I really need to see the new BSG. I think we might like it. I have only heard good things about it.

I really, really like it. The rest of season two (which just wrapped up a couple of weeks ago) is not out on DVD yet...and it is KILLING me. The last episode on the DVDs was a terrible cliff hanger!

sorry, but if you name your kid reece, you need to desensitize yourself to "reece's pieces" jokes. it's just GONNA happen.

on an only slightly related note: i had a student once named mykaylah. it's pronounced the way you pronounce michaela. her mom used to get SO pissed if you misspelled her name...even if the poor misspeller had just HEARD the name and never seen it written...as if we all would spell that name m-y-k-a-y-l-a-h on a first try. and i think it's pretty and a nice name, and i don't object to people using interesting names or spellings...but you can't expect people not to spell it your way all the time.
(if it sounds like i am comparing your sister in law to this lady, i am not...just made me think of it.)

on a much more related note: i remember when sarah was pregnant with oskar and we all just about died when they said he was going to be called oskar. and then...when he was born 7 weeks early at 2 pounds, it seemed even crazier to name this tiny little orange sized baby that big, old name. but it grew on us, and he grew into it, and i just can't imagine him being ANYTHING but oskar now. it fits him. it IS him, and now i LOVE it.

okay, now i am done with the longest comment ever. :)

I know what you mean. Oskar's name kind of surprised me too, but just the few times I've met the boy it was obvious that is really the perfect name for him. Reece will grow on me, I'm sure. She sure looks like a Johnson! It is freaky wierd! I think already having three grandkids on that side of the family, none of which bear any resemblance to the Johnson's or each other, makes it almost shocking to see this baby that looks so much like my husband!

maybe they chose an unusual name to counteract johnson? reece johnson is more memorable than ann johnson, right?
but you are no stranger to explaining your name :)

hey, i have a NEW song you might want as zoe's song....i am alway on the lookout for one to match those big eyes and sweet spirit.

Well...what is it!? I did her slide show...and set it to a song I *thought* I liked. But I don't. I mean, I like the song, but it doesn't fit the slides somehow. *sigh* why is it so hard to find a song for her? I've already got songs picked out for Mari and Luci's second slide shows!

Oh, I have that one on the Curious George soundtrack! I used a Jack Johnson song actually...it is the one that doesn't seem quite right. I had Upside Down as one of the choices for Luci's second slide show. We are thinking along the same lines though...Jack Johnson's sound is PERFECT for Zoe.
