Yesterday afternoon, Jesse the dog was out back with the girls playing "soccer". She is a very active dog for being 11 1/2 years old. Right in the middle of the game she started limping, and then kind of collapsed and then got herself up again and wouldn't put any weight on one of her back legs. I looked it over, but couldn't see anything wrong with it. This morning she still wouldn't put any weight on it which makes going up a down stairs almost impossible. So I took her to vet.
She blew out her ACL. Is that the right way to say it? Regardless, I now have to shell out $1500-$2000 to get her knee fixed. And deal with recovery and physical therapy on a geriatric dog. Weeks and weeks of it. But she is so healthy and vital and wonderful, there is no question about doing it. Of course we will. Jesse was our baby before we had babies and has been the babysitter and a pillow and a dress up doll and friend and a playmate to our girls. We will do this for her and hopefully give her several more years of healthy vital life. I feel terrible for the poor dog. The vet says this is really painful. She is on pain meds, but still. And she HATES not being able to navigate the stairs and follow us around the house. After several near tragic attempts, I've blocked the stairs off (no easy task in a tri-level house). She is breaking my heart. And it is only going to get worse. Next Wednesday she'll have surgery and then REALLY be an invalid for awhile. The girls are so solicitous with her.
Dogs are pathetic things. Like babies, you just wish you could explain what is going on to them. Her big brown eyes are going to give me bad dreams tonight.

Date: 2008-05-23 05:35 am (UTC)Jube (short for Jubilee - my male siamese/tabby mix) got into a fight on Wednesday...possibly with the local groundhog. Had a bite sized chunk missing from his side. I had to bandage him up and confine him to quarters for a few days. Last year he had a chunk taken out of his tale. Same groundhog? Friday he goes in for shots anyway, so we'll have it checked out then.
Anyway, I'll be thinking of Jesse...
